Personality
Reserved and serious, Alden has a studious nature which has always served him well both academically and professionally. He has a cool and chill demeanor that indicates a certain "live and let live" philosophy in life, but doesn't easily welcome social interaction. He largely prefers to keep to himself. It isn't because he's shy or particularly introverted, more that he can get easily frustrated and annoyed by other people, so he prefers to ignore most folk. He's something of a grump at heart. He never developed any real patience for social niceties and prefers blunt, honest truths to pleasant lies.
As you might expect, he has few close friends, but his social shortcomings are largely compensated for by a quick wit and penchant for sarcasm. He's not particularly kind, but neither is he cruel (far from it), and he's quite funny and laid-back around people who don't annoy him. He is most comfortable around people who share a love of quiet, but he also likes being in groups where there's enough going on that he attracts no particular attention. He enjoys busy parties where you can drift between conversations, coming and going as it interests you and blending into the din of noisy music and raucous, drunken antics. The sort of situations where it doesn't matter what anyone says because it's too loud to make out the exact words, and you laugh because someone else is laughing, not because you know the joke.
Though intelligent, Alden is a poor liar. He can't fake things easily. If he's uninterested in something or someone, it shows. On the flip side, his positive reactions tend to manifest in such a low-key way that they barely register unless he makes a concerted effort, so he rarely comes across as desperate or needy. He has a definite preference towards remaining neutral in all things. He tends to avoid making strong statements or taking sides, and he has no particular sense of honor or moral code. On those rare occasions when he does make a choice or declaration, he sticks by what he says. He doesn't break his word once it's given, and it's hard for him to change his mind once he's made it up, to the point where he can be rather stubborn in his mindset and will see things through to the end even when the end is foreseeably bad.
Alden's combination of neutrality, nonchalance, and indifference has made him largely inclined towards casual relationships in his life, both romantically and socially. He has few deep connections and that suits him fine. Ultimately, when he finally does choose to commit to another person, it's a massive demonstration of trust on Alden's part. As someone who doesn't open up to and trust others easily, that's very significant on Alden's part.

History
An only child, Alden was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but spent most of his youth moving around with his parents as his father pursued architecture jobs around the world. As a result, Alden formed few attachments to other people for the first two decades of his life, instead choosing to escape into books and schoolwork. Unlike most children who escape into reading, Alden's preference in books tended towards history and other nonfiction subjects, and in the course of moving he managed to be bumped up a year when his penchant for knowledge helped him test into a higher grade at a new school.
When Alden was a teenager, his father became involved in a long-term project to revitalize the downtown metropolitan area of Toronto. The family's presence in Toronto led Alden to choose to attend the University of Toronto for his schooling. After a listless first year, he focused in on biology and medical science, driven by a deep fascination in the mechanics of the human body. He did well in school, consistently placing in the top fifth percentile, and in his third year applied to U of T's medical school. He was initially waitlisted, but luckily a few spots opened up after admissions were over and he was able to squeeze in at the last minute, mere days before classes started. (His being local hadn't played any role in his initial application, but it definitely helped when it came to the last-minute opening.)
Recognizing that he had only managed to get in by the skin of his teeth, Alden worked especially hard to prove himself in the curriculum. It didn't hurt that there was a lot of reading involved. For the first semester of the program, everything went very well. It wasn't until the second semester that the trouble began.
